Myths and Misconceptions about Charter Schools

 

1. Charter Schools cost the tax payers more money. 

Actually, charter schools receive approximately 20% less funds than district schools. 

Each child is allotted a certain amount of money to be educated.

 

2. Charter Schools charge a fee.  

Charter schools are public schools and are funded by the state. 

No fee is required to attend a charter school

 

3. Charters hand pick students.

Students are chosen by a lottery system unless

a sibling is already attending the school.

 

4. Teachers at charter schools are not qualified to teach.

Teachers in charter schools do not need to hold a

teacher certification, however, they must meet the

Arizona rubric for Highly Qualified.

 

5. Charter Schools are not held accountable.

Charter schools must administer the state required assessments

and show adequate yearly progress.  Curriculum must be aligned

to the Arizona state standards.

 

6. Charter schools are a realatively new idea.

 The first charters were approved over ten years ago. 

There are ovr 475 charter sites in Arizona serving at least 85,000 students.
